recording format:
REDCODE RAW, a proprietary format that compresses the raw data stream from the chip into either 28 or 36 MB per second for 4k 2:1
recording medium:
Compact Flash, current 8GB cards allow a recording time of 4 minutes of 4k footage or up to 16 minutes of 2k footage. Footage has to be backed-up on-set with a computer which allows for instant checking of exposure and focus. A 500GB hard disk will hold approximately 250 minutes of 4k footage.
workflow:
RED provides free software for conversion and color grading of the RED footage to quicktime, DPX and others. Editing of the REDCODE RAW is currently possible with Final Cut Pro, other solutions are on their way. Native color grading of REDCODE RAW is currently possible with Scratch.
